Photo Shoot

I took images of my little sisters for my music magazine, because I didn't want any of myself!

I used this specific mise en scene, the white plain background with the rugged white wooden floor, to make the artist stand out. After taking the photos I had noticed that the lighting is poor, so that is one factor I would improve if I had chance.
These 3 photos above are the photos i have chosen to include in my music magazine. My magazine, MANIC!, will be aimed towards teenagers/young adults, interested in music such as metal, punk and screamo and with their being a young girl as the main artist, shown on all, the cover, contents and double page spread, it creates more controversy for the buyers. It gives the magazine a much more daring, edgy feel to it, as it is risky putting a young child on the front, which is how the readers, themselves, feel. The personalities of the readers will relate to the front cover, with it having a different edge to it. I have also decided to go to another level and include, not exactly explicit, but words that you wouldn't normally see on the front cover of a magazine e.g 'arse'.
Putting a young girl in the magazine also relates to the rise of young YouTube stars, such as the latest teen-hit sensation, Justin Bieber. Oh god. He started off as a young 15 year old boy living in a small town in Canada. He loved to play Ice Hockey and singing was just a hobby. After getting bored one day and putting a youtube video on the web of himself singing, he started to gain more and more hits on his videos and was then founded by a man known as 'Scooter'. The fact that Molly, the artist, is only 8, it relates to the fact that young stars are on the increase and that the magazine can also relate to others around the world.

Planning a Photo Shoot

My photoshoot will include several images of myself with different clothes, hairstyles, backgrounds etc.

For the front cover, I have decided to take a very eye catching image wearing bold stated clothes to make it stand out and seem appealing to the audience.
The image for the front cover will be.. TO BE FINISHED

For the contents page i have decided to take an image against a white background so I can write the contents around the model.
The image for the contents page will be taken in a bedroom, listening to music, therefore relating to the audience.

I have decided to take a horizontal photo for the double page spread in my music magazine.
I will take the image so I have plenty of room to add the text about the 'artist' I will be interviewing in the double page spread.

Exploring Ideology and Identity - Lady Gaga Interview

Identity is a patchwork of many different influences.
Ideology is a way of thinking.

Lady Gaga

Gaga is very influenced by many things, which she puts into her music, such as:
  • 70's glamour
  • 80's synth-sounds
  • Dance and club-fever
  • Beatles, David Bowie, Madonna
  • Glamour, Fashion
  • Filth
  • Lower east-side fashion and swagger
Gaga represents a very underground pop social group with a little R'n'B, she creates new genres with the influences given to her by other artists and places. She makes her own music, creating new sounds.

Gaga expresses herself through her music and through her fashion. By writing her own music and making her own 'fashion', she has become one of the most famous women in the world and has created a whole new fashion/music statement. She is very bold, colourful and confident and she isn't shy to try new things, as you can see below:

Gaga is the pop queen of the 21st century. She is new, fresh, underground pop. She was educated at the Convent of the Sacred Heart, so grew up a to be a very intelligent, well behaved lady, she is now one of the worlds most daring people.
She identifies so well in the 'pop' genre. If someone was to say, define pop, my answer would simply be, 'Lady Gaga'.
She stands for everyone in society, she believes everyone is able to conquer the world and that everyone can be themselves. She very strongly stands for the gay community too. She sees everyone as equal and believe that life is simply, what you make it.
Lady Gaga is very inspirational. The media sees her as a very strong, bold, confident women, similar to Madonna.  They see her as an icon. She has so much publicity because she is extremely talented and different.
Compared to other people in the 'pop' genre, such as Justin Bieber, Rhianna and Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga is much more dance, she is also alot more famous because of her quirky style and strong voice. But, compared to Cher and Madonna, Lady Gaga is also a fellow matriarch, being very powerful with her music.

    Identity and Ideology

Identity is a patchwork of many different influences.

David Gauntlett; “Identity is problematic. Everyone thinks they’ve got one.”

    Defining identity:
    ·      How you describe yourself
    ·      The way that you express and present yourself
    ·      Who and what you identify with
    ·      Your clothes and appearance
    ·      The phrases, expressions and sentiments you most commonly use
    ·      What you claim to ‘stand for’ (your values)
    ·      Your behaviour

Ideology is a way of thinking.

What do we value in Britain?
    ·      Armed Forces
    ·      Seasonal holidays
    ·      Personal freedom
    ·      History
    ·      Property and belongings
    ·      Equality
    ·      Rule of Law
    ·      English language

WE have values; THEY have an ideology.

Hegemony: The way that those in power hold on to it.

    Flat plan ideas.

These are my flat plan ideas for my music magazine.
I have used sample flat plans found on the college portal, and made them my own by including my own pictures and moving around certain assets on the cover, contents and double page spread.

    Analysing magazine house syles.

These are certain front covers and contents pages from the magazine, 'Elle'. I have analysed them and came to a conclusion about what I will use in my own magazine, e.g colour schemes.

    Magazine Conventions.

These are magazine conventions. Conventions are basically, what you get on the front cover of a magazine. I have labeled all the conventions found on two different magazine covers, then I have split one magazine cover into the rule of thirds and labeled what is found in certain thirds.

    Professional Photography ideas.

I searched through a few professional photographers websites to find different images, so i could choose whether they would be suitable for a front cover, contents page or double page spread...

Final College Magazine front cover & contents.

These are both my Front Cover and Contents Page.
I wanted my magazine to be appealing and different, so i used a pop art effect, to make it eye catching.
I advertised pages that relate to students and make them want to buy the magazine to read about it. Both my front cover and contents page include only my own photography, and my front cover does include a medium close-up as told. I also used the REF - Magazine Hyperguide to help me find certain effects on photoshop.

My contents page is designed using photoshop, using browns and oranges, to relate to the autumn edition theme that my magazine will be based on. I placed several pictures onto the main picture and used the rubber to remove the background and placed them on, and gave the pictures placed around the main image a see-through effect using the opacity scrollbar.

    Music Scene Analysis.

In my music scene analysis, I have been researching front covers and analysed one, showing what basic magazine front covers will have on them.

This music scene analysis powerpoint is analyzing album covers. I have put several examples of album artwork on the slides and analyzed one, to show the basic conventions of an album cover.

    Playing about with photoshop.

This is my first attempt at 'photoshopping'.
Starting off with three separate images:
    A female silhouette,

    A 'stars' background,

    and a perfume bottle.

I found the background on the portal, and used the image of the perfume and the female silhouette, both also found on the portal, and 'placed' them onto the background and blended them in, cutting out the perfume image background.
I also added text to advertise the perfume product.
This is my second attempt at photoshop.
I used a blank canvas and used the gradient tool on the canvas, to create the black and white background.
I then found an image on the internet of the Olympus camera, placed it onto the background and cut out the background using the eraser and magic eraser.
I then placed a picture of myself, small enough to show the medium close-up shot of myself, and cut around the image to get the circle and placed it into the camera lens.

    Current Magazine Covers

These are three front covers from different magazines that I focused on and used to create my own College Magazine cover.
I used the ‘Newsweek’ magazine for the pop art effect, I used the ‘V’ magazine for the colour scheme, and ‘Prior Paparazzi’ for the small medium close-up shot (head and shoulders) in the center of the magazine.

Explaining the Process of my Questionnaire

I created a questionnaire that I used to find out about students social class, subjects they had taken and plans for the future.
This is a copy of all the questions on my questionnaire:
    1. Are you male or female?  Male | Female
    2. How old are you?
    3.  How many siblings do you have?   0-1| 2-4 | 5+
    4. Where do you live?
    5. What subjects did you take in college?
    6.   Do you plan to go to university?
    7. Do you have something you are working towards or aspire to?
    8. What would you like to be doing in 5 years time?
    9. What is your ideal job?
    10. How do you feel about spending time with family and friends?  Love | Like | Dislike | Hate
    11. When you go shopping, do you always go for the same brand every time?
    12.  Do you spend most of your time with friends or family, hanging out?
    13. What do you do with most of your time?
    14. Would you describe yourself as a workaholic?
    15. Would you buy any fake brand item if it looked the same as a real brand?
    16. Would you do anything to impress someone?
    17. Do you like to recycle?
    18. Are you concerned about the environment?
    19. Do you donate money to the poor or less fortunate?
    20. Do you plan what you are going to buy or quickly buy something when you need it?
    21. Which social group would you socialize with most? Emo | Chav | Mosher | Goth | Indie | Punk | Other
I got my results for the questionnaire by asking 5 students at random to take part and to fill out my questionnaire, using quantitative and qualitative approaches, requiring simple yes/no answers or a small complex answer. I collected all the results, wrote them down and typed them up to get a final result.
The reason I created this questionnaire was to find a social group, whom which the magazine will be written for. I included questions which would help me categorise each of the 5 students into a social class, belongers, emulators, socially concious, balanced, achiever or needs driven.
I chose these specific questions because they are very straight to the point and if answered correctly, I can easily categorize each student into a social class, which made it easier for me to choose my College Magazine audience.
I chose question 16, because it helps me to look at the audience through the wannabe theory. I also chose questions 10, 11 and 12, because they help me to look at the audience through the belonger theory. Questions 17 and 18 help me look at the audience through the socially concious theory.
Using and checking through my results, I had eventually found a social group that I can relate the magazine to, in this case, my College Magazine will be specifically for 'Belongers'.
A Belonger is stereotyped as someone that lives in an average town and loves spending time with family and friends, having fun and hanging out. They tend to be hard working and are most likely religious. They also tend to be very brand loyal, by only buying brands that they are confident with and usually buy.

      Images using different camera shots.

The following are images me and my group had taken around college using different camera shots.

This is a close up shot image, taken using the macro feature on the camera to show more detail of the flower.

This image is a juxtaposition shot, contrasting the beautiful flower against the cut stems.

This is a juxtaposition shot and also a 'rule of third' shot, contrasting the healthy trees and bushes against the dying grass.

This is a low-angled camera shot of a tree. The colour of the sky has become brighter by contrasting against the dark green of the leaves.
